Dear Friends,

Here's a bit of history and an activity for Bay Area Folks:

Can you see Mt. Diablo?

Each year and only on December 7, the beacon atop Mt. Diablo is lit in
remembrance of those who served and sacrificed at the bombing of Pearl
Harbor.

Per the article linked below, Charles Lindbergh performed the ceremonial
first lighting of the beacon, which aided early commercial aviation.

It remained unlit from the day *after* Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 8, 1941, until
1964. That Dec. 7 it was re-lit by Charles Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief of the
Pacific Forces during WWII.

Each year since then, the beacon is lit each December 7 for a single night.

Over the ensuing years the light fell into disrepair, causing yearly anxiety
as to whether it would still light, until the beacon was restored in 2013.

This year there is a ceremony starting at 3:45PM at the beacon, and it will
be lit at 5:00PM.

So if you are in a location where you can see Mt. Diablo (and it's clear
enough), watch for the "Eye of Diablo" blinking as it rotates atop the
mountain.
