Dear Friends,

As expected, I'm giving far fewer public lectures in 2016. This has given me
a chance to catch my breath.

However, if you know of a history, civic, club, public service or other
organization that has a regular speaker series, my calendar is a lot more
open than it was in 2015 and I'm still giving talks.

The next public lecture is going to be so fun!

It will be a light brunch at the gorgeous Conservatory of Flowers in Golden
Gate Park, followed by my lecture entitled "Farewell to the Fair."

"Farewell to the Fair" is a poignant look at the fabulous closing day
celebrations and ceremonies that took place December 4, 1915. It also
answers the question, "why did they tear it all down?" and describes the
complex dissolution of 635 acres of Fairgrounds adorned with several hundred
lovely structures.

The presentation also shows what became of some of the most famous elements
of the PPIE and how the Palace of Fine Arts became the sole Exposition
building remaining on the site. I will show dramatic and often rare images
using photos, editorial cartoons, lantern slides, souvenirs and even movies.

The schedule:

10:30 AM: mimosa bar (one free mimosa included in admission) and light
refreshments.

I will be selling and autographing copies of my book, San Francisco's Jewel
City: The Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915 both before and
after the lecture, and can accept credit cards, cash or checks.

I am also excited to tell you that just today I learned the book has earned
a bronze medal for Excellence in U.S. History from the Independent
Publishers Book Awards. (My first national-level prize)

The book also received a Gold Medal at the California Book Awards; and the
Oscar Lewis Award from the San Francisco History Association.

11:00 (approximate) Lecture: Farewell to the Fair

After the lecture: More book sales and free admission to the Conservatory
and the fabulous PPIE themed Garden Railway! (Seen here)

Cost: Members of the Conservatory of Flowers $20, General Admission $25.

Registration includes admission to the Conservatory and the special exhibit
"Garden Railway: 1915 Panama-Pacific," one free mimosa from the mimosa bar
(non-alcoholic options available) and light refreshments.
